Sacred Heart Catholic School

Daycare, Preschool, Elementary, High School

Sacred Heart Schools, promoting the religious formation of youth, is a Daycare, Preschool, Elementary School and High School Catholic educational institution celebrating its 100th anniversary in the fall of 2012.   While Catholic Education in East Grand Forks approaches the century mark, the school programs are housed in a new facility moved into in 1999.  Sacred Heart School is located next to Sacred Heart Church (200 Third Street NW, East Grand Forks, MN). The elementary program consists of a daycare, preschool, and grades kindergarten through grade six.   The office address is 117 Fourth Street NW, East Grand Forks, MN and the phone is 218-773-1579 . Mr. David Andrys is the principal.

The high school program consists of grades seven through grade twelve and is located on the top floor of the building.   The office address is 122 Third Street NW, East Grand Forks, MN and the phone is 218-773-0230. Mr. Phillip Meyer is the principal.

Sacred Heart School is unique because it is a combined elementary and high school program supported by a single parish. While multiple parishes today support most of the American Catholic high schools, Sacred Heart has continued to be primarily supported by the parish, families, friends, and alumni. Currently, there are 137 Catholic secondary schools in the United States (2000-01). There are twenty-two Catholic High Schools in Minnesota and four in North Dakota. That is, 19% of all the Catholic High Schools in the United States are in this two-state area. It shows the importance region’s parishes and families have placed in the existence of Catholic Schools.

Another interesting comparison of Sacred Heart School and other Catholic Schools is tuition. Catholic education was free for most of its history, receiving 100% parish subsidy. Tuition started in the 1960′s at Sacred Heart with a nominal amount of about $100. Sacred Heart’s elementary parish tuition is $2,200 (2007-08). The high school tuition is $2,800 (Catholic parish rate). The median parish school tuition in the United States is $1,787 for elementary and $4,300 for the median Catholic school freshman (2000-2001).  Out-of-parish and non-Catholics pay more slightly more per student ($2,300 and $3,025).   Tuition covers approximately 48% of the cost of the school budget. The parish subsidizes about 10% of the school’s costs. Bishop Michael Hoeppner of the Crookston Diocese, and the Grand Forks parishes do support Sacred Heart, for which we are very grateful.

Of increasing importance has been our Development Program and Endowment, which must support 39% of the school budget annually ($471,000). Parents, friends, local businesses, and alumni play an important role. As the Development budget has increased, the efforts to fund raise have also increased.   The obvious question is why would you send your child to Sacred Heart?  The reasons are many – small school, academics, safety – but the most important reason is that parents want their children to grow up in a faith-filled school environment while belonging to the church community that has given them the foundational belief in Jesus Christ.
