## Math

The goal of the Sacred Heart Mathematics Department is to develop critical thinkers in preparation for success in high school and beyond. Our programs, in correlation with the Minnesota State Standards, provide our students with the mathematical tools and logical reasoning skills to become productive citizens. We utilize various teaching strategies and assessments to meet the needs of all students of different ability levels. In doing so, our students will gain knowledge and become proficient in mathematical skills. Our vision is that our students will apply mathematical tools and techniques to function effectively as responsive citizens in an ever-changing world.

### Pre-Algebra – Grade 7

Pre-Algebra focuses on maintenance of arithmetic skills while introducing the basics of algebra.  Topics covered include:  operations using whole numbers, decimals, fractions, positive and negative integers, measurement, ratio, proportion, percent, graphs, exponents, roots, order of operations, statistics, algebraic skills for expressions, solving equations, and everyday life applications.

### Algebra 1 – Grade 8

Algebra 1 reviews the topics covered in PreAlgebra, as well as focusing on the following topics: classifications of numbers, number theory, exponents, order of operations, applications of ratio and proportion, solving equations, coordinate graphing, graphs of linear equations, exponential power and product rules, systems of equations, properties, polynomials, probability, scientific notation, solving inequalities, factoring trinomials, algebraic skills for expressions, and everyday life applications. Geometric models built by students.

### Geometry – Grade 9

Geometry covers the basic concepts of both plane and solid geometry.  Plane geometry will include the study of lines, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, circles, and the relationships between them. Trigonometry will also be covered as part of the geometry course. Students will be introduced to formal proofs and logical reasoning. Solid geometry will include the study of surface area and volume of prisms, pyramids, and cylinders.  Throughout the course, real life applications of geometry will be emphasized.

### Algebra 1.5 – Grade 10

Algebra 1.5 reviews the topics covered in Algebra 1, as well as preparing students for Algebra 2. The course focuses on the following topics: expressions, functions, equations, systems of 2 equations, inequalities, polynomials, exponentials, radicals, and real life applications.

### Algebra II & Trigonometry (Grades 10 & 11)

Algebra 2 reviews the topics covered previous Algebra classes, as well as preparing students for PreCalculus. The course focuses on these general topics: equations, inequalities, expressions, functions, systems of equations, application problems, quadratic equations, exponentials, radicals, imaginary numbers, and polynomials.

### Pre-Calculus Course (Grades 11 & 12)

PreCalculus reviews the topics covered in Algebra 2, as well as preparing students for College Algebra or College PreCalculus. The course focuses on the following topics:

Classification of numbers, interval notation, functions, domain and range of functions, solving equations, graphing linear equations, solving systems of equations, polynomials, algebraic fractions, simplifying complex fractions, solving quadratic equations, exponentials, probability, scientific notation, solving inequalities, all operations with radicals, non-linear graphs and equations, all operations with imaginary numbers, and many real-life math and science applications.

### College Pre-Calculus & Calculus courses for College Credit through Northland Community Technical College

Sacred Heart students in grades 11 and 12 who qualify are also able to take College PreCalculus and College Calculus through Northland Community Technical College (NCTC) in East Grand Forks.
